Our fire angels
The helicopters are collecting water from the Halswell Quarry ponds (at the end of my street) and carrying it to hot spots. With their fixed wing counterparts, which are dropping fire retardant, they have been working tirelessly since the cloud cover rose mid morning. Sometimes two at a time in the ponds. And this has been going on for days.
How lucky that the Quarry Park itself was spared. It was certainly under threat.
More than 2000 hectares over the Port Hills have burned in the last six days, with the loss of 11 houses. At this stage the fire is contained but not fully under control, should there be a strong wind blow up.
Yesterday we were able to access our house after being evacuated three days before. So glad to be back!
