Mr Woodpecker

Who should be peck pecking outside our window this morning but Mr Woodpecker?  I think he is  a red-shafted Northern Flicker.  First time I've been able to photograph one!

A North American native, this subspecies resides in the west, while another subspecies (the yellow-shafted) resides in the east.  Always lots to learn about birds when visiting a country.

All the birds disappeared from the tree soon after, as we had a storm come through, with wind that closed the ski lifts, followed by sleet and snow.
