...jolly?
I would like to propose a working definition or set of 'guiding principles' almost for the notion of a work jolly:
A work jolly is something you go on occasionally while exercising the normal function of your role. It will generally involve an overnight stay somewhere more exotic than Blackpool. The jolly should normally be undertaken with those of your colleagues who you can happily share one or two beers with and discuss matters other than work. In line with this, most of your meagre expense allowance will be spent in a restaurant or pub where the waiter is happy to fudge the bill a bit and put the gammon steak and three pints you had through as avocado and bacon salad with sparkling water. The next day, you will arise feeling reasonably fresh, safe in the knowledge that you are clawing a little something back from the system (which you deserve right as you work hard and care about your job?).
Just to clarify, my recent work jolly to Brussels was nothing like this.
