A walk on the beach
I woke early and rather than stay in bed with my demons, went for a long overdue walk by the beach. I wanted to get a ton sur ton shot of the pigeon at the back of the queue, against the black and white sidewalk stones, but it thought I was too slow and headed off for a walk on the beach too. Extra photo - the beach itself.
Ronaldo came back from work with his usual store of doom and gloom - he tells us more than we want to know about everything that's going wrong with the world. This time he was repeating the warnings about staying home tomorrow, as the families of policemen would be preventing them from going to work tomorrow. They have every reason for wanting to do so. Their salaries are ridiculously low and being paid late, but much worse, they are being picked off at almost one a day by the bandits, who are better armed and out of control. Hard to blame them for wanting to strike, when judges and politicians give themselves huge raises and are entitled to ridiculous benefits, while denying modest raises to the police, firemen and others who actually do something for the population. There was a bit of a riot downtown this afternoon, public servants protesting against the planned privatisation of the water company clashing with police as they tried to break into the Assembly building.
The situation is out of control in the state of Espirito Santo, where there is a police strike, and with no police on the streets, many people have died . However, the police command is not backing a strike in Rio, so the warnings to stay at home are more of a precaution, because the situation is sensitive - and the more talk there is of rioting and sacking, the more likely it is to occur.
