New Zealand fantail

It's very sad that most of the native New Zealand songbirds are struggling to survive due to loss of habitat and predation by introduced mammals. There were no mammals on the islands until humans arrived and so they have no fear, making them easy prey for cats, possums, etc. One of the birds that continues to do well despite being super-fearless is the fantail, which we've often seen in family groups. A lady with a dog showed us that if you make squeaking noises they come very close. This little juvenile was very confused when I tried it. Good job cats haven't learned to squeak!
