Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

It’s one of Cape Town’s Top 10 but, despite all our visits to the city, we have never been to this amazing place. Maybe it’s because neither of us is that interested in flowers and the phrase ‘botanical garden’ is enough to put us off and persuade us to do something else. Today we suddenly decided to go and we are so glad we did.

What an amazing place. A huge area of landscaped gardens with avenues, paths, boardwalks, lawns, pools and vast areas of planting of all kinds. The vegetation is almost exclusively indigenous – about 9,000 of Southern Africa’s 22,000 plant species are cultivated here. And all with the superb backdrop of Table Mountain. Of course we were there at the ‘wrong’ time of year, but there were just enough flowers to give us an idea of how magnificent it must have been a few months ago.

A lovely lunch and then we returned to our place. Now Gordon has ‘found’ the Rugby and is very happy. I am going to walk by the sea.
