inspired by Fairtrade
We met Belinda and her fellow walkers for a storytelling session at the Waterside cafe. They were passing through Kendal on their six day walk from Garstang, the first Fairtrade town in the world, to the Oxfam shop in Keswick where they will celebrate the 70th birthday of Oxfam.
We heard about the Fig Tree centre in Garstang, providing Fairtrade refreshments, information and experiences. We took part in a unique re-telling of the story of the Little Red Hen, and listened to Push Krishnamurthy tell of his involvement with coffee growers in India as they struggled for the right to keep their land. He says:
'Walking with a purpose has a profound meaning across time and culture. Walking has been used as a social, spiritual and political action, from pilgrimages to hunger marches. We can walk almost anywhere, we don't need to be told how to do it, you can be unfit or energetic, and it's free. We can walk for our own well-being, and we can walk for change.'
