Wow, a big big THANK YOU for all the loveliness shown to yesterday's murmuration!

Today seems an oddly apt day for this blip, a day when many of us will be wondering what the future holds, a day on which it looks like the world took another step into the dark.
This week I've seen someone that I can only describe as a poor example of what we can be become the most powerful (& orange) man in the world. I've listened to a Prime Minister, who doesn't feel she needs to answer to the people who put her there or follow the rule of law, say that everyone should get behind a plan that very nearly half of us think is simply wrong.

But amidst the dark this week I've seen a lot of shining lights. The First Responders supporting their communities, quite literally saving lives. The Octogenarian lady who came to our door collecting for a food bank. The local farmer driving a vintage bus to take pensioners to the supermarket. These are the people I see around me every day.

Last week I was posed a laughable question that became an itch, that slowly lit a candle. I've had a week of meetings and interviews, I've spent a lot of time talking to friends and strangers, gone on a lot of long walks to  ponder. I'm in the very fortunate position of (mostly) being able to choose what I do, to do things I think matter, so today I accepted the nomination to become the LibDem* candidate for County Councillor for my area. At heart I don't really think that there's a need for party politics in local government, though I'm pragmatic enough to know it will always exist. The councillors I've talked with have nearly all simply wanted to represent and help their communities - and that doesn't strike me as a bad place to start. Obviously there's no saying I'll even get elected, but at least I'll know I tried to do what I could.

* and I've been clear from the start, I'll answer to my conscience, then the people who elected me and finally the party.
