Day 2 @ Yellowstone : the photo safari

Of course the post has to be the animal that is iconic of Yellowstone - sorry wolf fans ,but it is the bison. These guys are huge- they weigh around a ton. Because the nights ( and occasionally the days) are well below zero they love the thermal features. This was a small herd hanging out on the banks of the Firehole River. The steam frosts over on their coats and sometimes they almost look white. This particular morning was 27 below when we started out ,though the temps in the afternoon were in the comfortable mid twenties above zero. The mist was heavy along all of the thermal features and created a dense fog in some places that simply was gorgeous in the sunrise.
The extras are a coyote and injured or sick female bison and a later spot on the river when the fog had cleared.
The 3 in the main post are females as their horns are smaller and more curved than the males.
I would suggest if you ever do this to take both the photo safari and the Madison river Wildlife tour. I did not  because they covered many of the same places. However: the wildlife tour the next day saw a wolf pack . Sigh.
