The Grass is Greener
I realised as Nicole was driving us to Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra that I had been in a car only a handful of times in the past year. It felt like we were going very fast on the highway although we were travelling within the speed limit.
We walked around the foreshore of the lake on the Yarralumla side. There were families having picnics and children swimming. I went up to touch the smooth white trunk of a huge gum tree. Some branches had splintered off due to a massive storm the night before. Further up, a tree had snapped across the base of its trunk; keeled over and lay on the grass. It looked like a sculpture made by nature.
The last of the day's light made a picture of the weeping willows leaning over the water and then as if an Australian postcard came to life, a brightly coloured rosella flew across the sky and 3 kangaroos hopped around about 20 metres away on the grassy knoll. The air was so fresh compared to what I've been used to. I could also smell chopped wood and freshly cut grass.
