Pennan

It's a telephone box, just by the sea. Can you place it?

I'll give you a clue, it's from a film made in 1983. A film that featured Burt Lancaster and Fulton Mackay. And Jenny Seagrove and Denis Lawson and Peter Capaldi!

I bought a copy of 'Local Hero' on DVD a couple of years ago - probably more, actually - and I found I still loved it just as much as I always have and I had a yearning to go and visit the town where it was filmed.

And then, today, the Minx was looking through the list of places to go that had been thoughtfully provided with our accommodation and mentioned that we were only a few miles along the coast from the location where they filmed the movie, which is called Pennan. So of course we went and it was exactly how I hoped it would be, right down to the little harbour. (If you've no idea what I'm talking about, watch the film. It's ace.)

After that we decided to stick with the recommendations on the things to do list and went to find the Last Bus Café, which was so hidden away that I was about to give up on the basis that we were surely lost when we saw a little wooden sign that simply read 'Café'.

And what a hidden treasure it was! So full that I wasn't sure we'd get a seat - an actual bus seat! - in this beautiful, bohemian (and vegan) spot, which looked to be hand-built in wood. After we'd eaten, one of the owners showed us 'round the site, which also has some unconventional accommodation including their new 'Space Station'. (We loved it at first sight and booked to go back in February.)
