Nature is cruel

Made a sad discovery at the pond this morning: two of the four cygnets have gone.

I feel so sorry for the swans, losing two little ones. We've been following their progress for a number of weeks now, feeding them at weekends and watching them through binoculars from the kitchen. I'd only just named them John, Paul, George and Ringo - after the Beatles, of course. That seems quite apt now, with just Paul and Ringo left.

The most likely explanation, and the one that's easiest to accept, is that they were caught by a neighbouring fox. Nature sure is cruel. I just hope the two surviving cygnets, Paul and Ringo, make it.
