One Crowded Hour

the tubular...

...bells flowers of kangaroo paws  are now flourishing in my garden and what a thrill it is to have clumps of them opening up into the distinctive 'claw structure' that names them.

Endemic to the south west of Western Australia the red and green paw, Anigozanthos manglesii is the floral symbol of the state, one of the original 12 species.

They really are the most amazing plants and as is the case with so many wildflowers... the shape of the flowers and the position of the pollen-bearing anthers is a feature which allows pollen to be deposited on the head of feeding birds. This pollen is transferred from flower to flower as the birds feed. Different species usually deposit pollen on different areas of the birds' head. This means that pollen from one species is unlikely to be deposited in the flowers of another species.

Clever clogs.
