Happy birthday Frank

This little family get together at the Care Home today was most touching. Frank is 85 today. He has been rather quiet and withdrawn lately, sleeping or sitting in silence for periods throughout the day.
His family arrived and encouraged him to open presents and eat his lunch, which they shared with him.
In the afternoon I took his birthday cake out with candles. These caught his attention and he had a go at blowing them out. Then he was given a slice of the luscious chocolate cake, always his favourite.
He finished the whole slice with a lot more enthusiasm than his lunch!
Familiar events seem to persist in the memory when the more mundane processes are lost, although recognition of the family sadly has disappeared.
I was glad that he enjoyed the cake anyway-there is always a place for cake!
