Homeward Bound
Driving south from Spokane, Washington toward Kennewick we saw more evidence of the ice-age Missoula Floods on the Columbia River Gorge in a 51-mile, free flowing section of the river. The Handford Reach National Monument contains 57,000 acres with several wildlife refuges and the WWII-era nuclear reactor site. The US Department of Energy is responsible for the one of the largest nuclear cleanup efforts in the world here.
As I snapped this photo from the car, I noticed a coal train heading west. I thought about the intersection of power--past, present and future: nuclear, coal, and a few miles away across the border into Oregon, wind power.
We had a wonderful, if short trip, to Glacier and Kalispell for Thanksgiving. And now we move toward the Winter Solstice and the return of the light!
