Gonville and Caius College.

One of the oldest and richest of Cambridge colleges, founded in1348. There are three symbolic gates in the college. The first is the Gate of Humility near the porter's lodge, which is the entrance for new students. Then in the centre of the college is one that is passed through all the time, known as the Gate of Virtue, although it has been suggested it should be renamed in this day and age ! Then the gate you see here as you look through Caius Court, is the Gate of Honour where students only pass through once to receive their degrees in the Senate House opposite. At one time, no scholar was admitted who, among other things, was a woman, seriously maimed, had a contagious disease or was a Welshman !  Caius Court was built...' lest the air, from being confined within a narrow space, becomes most foul...'
