All Hallows' Eve is approaching
being the evening before All Saints day on the 1st, which is followed by All Souls Day on the 2nd.
In Old English it was called Eallra H?lgena aefen.
It may or may not have originated in the Gaelic festival of Samhain ("summer's end").
The in the 8th century the church moved All Saints Day from 13 May to 1 November which may or may not have been in order to absorb the Pagan practice into Christianity.
Stingy Jack, was a miserly farmer who played a trick on the devil and as punishment was cursed to wander the earth, lighting his way with a candle inside a hollowed-out turnip
Where the modern day begging door to door, cheap plastic costumes, waste of pumpkins & horror films fit into this, I don't know.
