I cannot resist these Romanesco broccoli when they appear in the greengrocer. Those incredible spiralling florets and the stunning green colour are so enticing that even Rob's mild dislike of broccoli is not enough to deter me.
If you look at the florets more closely you can see that they are built from smaller florets increasing in size and number as they work downwards.
1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34...... is the magical sequence that describes the very building blocks of life. If you draw connected blocks of those sizes on graph paper they form a spiral, and very soon reach the edges of the paper. It explains why snails have spiral shells and why sunflowers are round, and the exponential growth of rabbit populations.
Each increasing number is the size of the previous two added together. Simple, yet applicable to so many of Nature's wonders.
There must be a book about it somewhere, I must research it!
