Hill Top Ramblings

Harter Fell

Mini home break day three. I started the day with a relaxing session at the osteopath, and then our destination was Longsleddale for a bit of a stroll. We set off from the end of the lane and decided to try and get to the head of the valley. We had our doughnuts( freshly bought from Morrisons!) half way along, and reenergised carried on, Pepper running in front chasing her ball. We eventually arrived at a finger post and followed the direction for Mardale Head. It has to be noted that although I had carefully put the map and Wainwright guide ready in the kitchen, we had both neglected to actually bring them and so only had a general idea of where we were going!
We could see the path heading up to what appeared to be the crest of the hill and thought we should make that our target as it was by now lunch time. As the slope levelled off we came to yet another fork and we could see some hikers in the (far) distance and Rob thought they might be heading for the summit of High Street! Come on, he said, we can get to there!
A bit more exhausted plodding and what should suddenly appear below us? Haweswater!
It was a completely windless afternoon and the lake was like a mirror. We could also see Red Tarn, and above it some two miles further was High Street. Time to stop and have our lunch, a Bath Bun from Ambleside yesterday.
It was obvious that High Street was a summit too far, but we were pleased and surprised to have got to Harter Fell, never a target this morning.
Fortunately, it was downhill all the way back to the car, though it did manage to rain on us for a while.
That is the end of our mini holiday from home, and it has been well used!
