Little monkeys!

Another hot and sticky day and again I slept in after a patchy night. Still, managing to get – slowly – through a few of those chores.

Poor Maria trod on a nail in her back yard yesterday, so had to send her off for a tetanus shot. Luckily, it wasn’t rusty, but still, I wish she’d hadn’t waited till today to have the shot (and she insisted on doing a whole days work in spite of her injury). Some years ago, my mother was bitten by a little possum we found as a tiny baby, refused to have the vaccination – or rather, we never even considered the danger of tetanus till several days after the bite, and weren’t too worried about rabies, as we’d had the little critter since it was so small. By the time we realised the danger and I took her to the hospital, it was past lunchtime on a hot day, she was in a very bad temper and wouldn’t wait. Gabriella Possum hadn’t even bitten her in anger, but she had her hand on the box it was travelling in, on a hot night in the car, and it was trying to push its way through one of the air holes. Anyway, she got what I suppose was a mild case of tetanus – but still extremely painful - and somehow survived, thank goodness.

A newcomer to Rio was looking for some plants for her veranda, so I offered some from our overcrowded patio and she came round with a friend and two delightful little boys to collect them. Luckily for us, Ronaldo appeared just in time to get them into the car – and luckily it was a large car! Meantime, the boys had a quick voyage of discovery up to the attic to meet our battered old rocking horse. It has been getting a bit lonely of late, not enough small children coming to the house, so was happy to give them a ride. Then they discovered the old pistol on the chest downstairs and I was shot innumerable times. It was such fun having them here, hope they’ll come again.
