 Our three and a half hour ferry crossing between the North and South Islands was warm, sunny and calm.
From Picton, the South Island terminal it is approximately a three hour drive to our home in Motueka - today we chose to drive via the scenic route to rejoin the main road at Havelock.

As we descended the Whangamoa Hill towards Nelson we rounded a corner and saw an enchanting sunset - an illusion of sea and sky, but it was actually all cloud with roadside vegetation in the foreground. The colour disappeared in moments and we continued our homeward journey.

1: Pencarrow Lighthouse - this sits at the entrance to Wellington Harbour. The lamp was lit for the first time on New Year's Day 1859 making it the first permanent lighthouse to be built in NZ. 
The lighthouse on the lower level was built in 1906.

3: From the entrance to Tory Channel, the route used by the Cook Strait ferries, both the North and South Islands are visible on a clear day. The South Island is in the foreground.
