Deceased dodgems!

Met up with friends in Saltaire for lunch today but before settling in at Salt's diner we had a walk through Robert's Park and up to Shipley Glen.

There is a tram that goes up to the glen but it is only in operation on Sunday afternoons, at the top there is beautiful moorland with extensive views around the area.

In days gone by there was a fairground just at the top of the tramway most of which has disappeared now with the area boarded up. It was demolished as recently as 2004 and the Ariel Glide, fondly remembered by my husband, was one of the world's oldest amusement park rides built about 1900. The tramway was opened in 1895 and is actually listed, being the oldest remaining cable tramway in Britain (cliff lifts excepted.)

Both of my friends remembered coming here as children - equating it to Blackpool!- but I don't think I ever did. I have more recent memories of bringing my own children to go on the tram or walk in the glen but the fair ground was already in disrepair. I think this one remaining 'attraction' is sadly beyond resurrection.
