……………….....….Gannets


There are four main gannet colonies found at Cape Kidnappers, Hawkes Bay, NZ. It is the largest mainland nesting place of gannets in the world.

The Australasian Gannet is a member of the Booby family and return each summer to Cape Kidnappers to nest.

This afternoon we took the overland safaris tour to see this spectacular sight and we weren’t disappointed. We were only metres from these birds. (The only access is by tour bus or an 18km return walk along the beach at low tide)

These two Gannets are greeting each other with loving affection.

1: The male gannets collect seaweed from the rocks below these cliffs for nesting material and today, being early in the season we saw plenty of this activity.
