Saying goodbye
There were a good 2,000 people down in front of the Winchester Cathedral tonight, partying in front of the big screen which has streamed the Olympics from day one. They'd come to see the closing ceremony of course. I saw one picnic table positively groaning with cupcakes and people were variously draped in Union flags, Australian flags, hoodies and jumpers, but I'd say the vast majority had bared their knees in honour of the occasion (quaint British habit - no, I'm joking).
I took lots of wide shots, people glowing in the twilight under ye ancient streetlights (a Winchester speciality) and the statue of a British Tommy who had the evening star hanging over his shoulder. But in the end liked this fragment the best - a man, a flag and a random piece of the Cathedral's iron railings. It felt suitable cinematic, as though the credits were about to role. If you don't do arty, I grovel!
Now I'm back home I can watch the rest on my telly, but I have to say the atmosphere in front of the screen was terrific. It's just that my knees want to be in their PJs
