Gently down the stream

Happiness

My lovely son Jack was working today, but because it was my birthday yesterday he arrived from Woking at about 6 with his sweetie girlfriend Steph. We sat in the pub garden for a drink, then my daughter cooked us a wonderful roast chicken and J & S produced present and cake. After which - well!

It was suggested we walk off supper down on the playing fields by the rugby club, but I knew something was up and - sure enough - this was magicked out of my daughter's bag. She'd bought Chinese lanterns on the internet and we lit them and sent them floating over the fields (and slightly too near the houses, I began to think). Sure enough, a policeman soon wobbled over on his bike to ask us if we've seen a group of youths who were reportedly setting light to rubbish bins in the area. "Not you, obviously," he said, and Jack agreed with him in his responsible voice while my daughter and I were trying not to snort with laughter.

Did he mean us or not? Jack was convinced not, but I'm not so sure. Luckily, we'd launched all our happiness lanterns by then and so went home. Ah, what fun!

And what I should have said earlier was a huge thank you for all your lovely birthday messages yesterday - it really did help to make my day and you are lovely people! THANK YOU
