During our recent holiday I liked the drink and desserts using Sea buckthorn so found this jar of jam in an Estonian supermarket.    On yesterday’s walk we passed many bushes of Sea buckthorn with their bright orange berries and I thought that after making blackberry jam during the last few days perhaps I could also make some Buckthorn jam.
Many of the shrubs were planted in the 70s to stabilise the sand dunes near Gullane but have since become very invasive and difficult to eradicate especially as they spread by suckers.  Unfortunately the berries are not easy to pick due to the thorns but it might be worthwhile particularly as they are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Also it's food for free.
