Thank you
Every grandmother loves to have a written thank you card from the grandchild recipient of a birthday or Christmas present. Sadly in this busy world when parents are rushing about with jobs and a home to run, it is becoming less likely that they have the time to stand over a child and make sure a present is acknowledged in a written letter. If one is fortunate there might instead be a phone call or an email, but sometimes nothing at all.
I can still remember the settling of a child at the table, pencil in hand and a blank piece of paper before them and their saying bleakly, what will I write?
I was taught that there should be a little preamble of chat before the thank you was added, and that always caused problems. However all gifts had to be acknowledged however tedious it was to the child.
When I was clearing out my Aunt's house several years ago, I found a thank you letter from daughter#1 when she was perhaps 8, writing about what had happened at Brownies that week and then adding the obligatory sentence - 'Thank you for my birthday money. I like money'. It still makes me smile.
Nina under the auspices of her Mum, daughter#4, is particularly conscientious about writting thank you letters and it is just so lovely to hear the envelope plop on to the mat and open it to see the card with her writing and drawings.
Thank you Nina, you are a well brought up little girl!
