Heriot's Open Day
October has made a beautiful mild and sunny entrance which must have been a godsend to the staff at George Heriot's School for their open day this morning.
It was the perfect day for outside activities , hockey, country dancing and piping.
I had a vested interest in taking His Lordship into the grounds to show him what is behind the building facade on Lauriston Place, as three of my grandchildren attend the school as did their mother, uncle and an aunt.
He was impressed by the inner quadrangle with its 17th Century stone carving, much of it by William Wallace, the King's master mason, and all shown to perfection in the sun.
All I hope is that these children appreciate their school's heritage which dates back to 1628 ( founded by George Heriot, aka Jingling Geordie, a Scottish Goldsmith) and do justice to their good fortune and to the privilege of attending.
