Sewers, Schmetterling and Shopping Vienna

SATURDAY

An early breakfast and, continuing with yesterday's theme, I then headed down to Karlsplatz for the Third Man Tour of the sewers beneath Vienna.

After a quick cappuccino served by a bow-tied waiter at the Cafe Museum, I donned a hard hat and headed underground. Unfortunately the only place available today was on the German-speaking tour, but the guide was excellent and laid on an individual English interpretation just for me.

We entered the subterranean world via the spiral staircase used in the film, and went on to see the storm overflow where the famous chase took place and the river which featured in the film. The river channel was big enough to accommodate several double-decker buses (see extra).

I paid another visit to the Schmetterling Haus before heading up to the shops and cafes.
