For those in peril on the sea . . .

(I borrowed the title from The Sailors' Hymn.)

This Larger-than life statue of a lifeboatman stands on watch from a commanding position on the bascule bridge at the entrance to the town and port of Lowestoft, Suffolk, by land and sea.

The two ships in my picture were waiting for the bridge to open for them to leave the harbour - a constant problem for shipping and road users alike, although there have been endless discussions and proposals for replacing the bridge, which causes severe traffic disruption as it has to be opened for almost every vessel entering or leaving and is seen as no longer fit for purpose, or for an extra crossing a short distance inland, but all so far have ended in stalemate.

Thank you all for your great comments on yesterday's photo on the same theme from this location.
