Burn Off
This is a New Zealand thing where the farmers light fires to burn off scrub and other undesirables from hillsides.
For years it was the cheapest way to clear but some significant disasters in recent years have upped the anti and cost a lot.
The walkers went past the base of this operation where 2 helicopters and monsoon buckets were on standby no doubt reflecting a big burn that got way out of control elsewhere a couple of years ago and cost the farmer $50,000.00 ++ in firefighting costs.
There are many that say this is an outdated practise and it certainly does nothing for our “Clean Green” image.
