We found a walk in a book from 2003 which went to the Wells of Rees and some other places in the middle of nowhere along the Southern Upland Way and back by a different route, so decided to do it.
But things weren't quite as planned!
First the road ended sooner than it used to and the latter part was very rough so we parked as soon as we could find a spot.
Then we discovered it passed a building site - over 100 wind turbines are being put up on the hills (Why do we need any more? If it's windy they have to turn some off and pay vast sums to the companies - 3.1m the last day - as there is more electricity than needed). It was interesting seeing the process close up but what an effect on the land and the views (see extra, and from a different angle they were a lot between us and the Range of the Awful Hand in the distance).
We got almost to the wells but they were obscured by dense bracken and it wasn't worth the effort to fight out way through to find them.
The return route said "follow the edge of the forest" - but it had been cut down and replanted so where was the edge? We scrambled through a short stretch to reach a new forest road and decided not even to try to find the rest of the way but return along the road to meet the outward route.
Despite all this we had a good walk on a bright and breezy day, with a couple of light showers, and lots of brambles to eat.
The rest of the day was spent doing not very much.
