Which came first, vending machine or egg?

The American food writer, Michael Pollan, says "Never buy your food where you buy your gas" which is probably good advice, generally, but I might make an exception when it comes to eggs.

At our local garage, a vending machine has appeared - put in £2.50 and get a tray of 15 free range eggs.
The owner of Nith Valley Eggs, near Thornhill, told DGWGO (Dumfries and Galloway What's Going On) recently:
“We are always looking for new ways to get our eggs straight from the farm to the consumer and we are really excited to have our new innovative egg vending machines. We can guarantee they will be from our farm to machine within 48 hours of lay. Our eggs will be sold on trays of 2.5 doz, in a sense we are taking our farm gate to the public. All eggs are produced in our unique woodland site near Thornhill so the consumer can be assured the eggs they are buying are local and as fresh as possible.”
