Day Trip To Cornwall

Last full day of our summer holidays in Devon, and it was raining.  Whatever the weather we had decided to head to Tintagel in Cornwall.  The drive there was grim.  Once in Tintagel, we had to get our fleeces and raincoats on as it was wet and cold.  First stop was Tintagel post office, which I am sure must have adorned a few chocolate boxes in its time.  We then went in search of a Cornish pasty shop we visited fifteen years ago.  We found it and bought a couple of pasties for lunch.  Next stop was Tintagel Castle, which is located in an amazing setting.  There is a step descent, followed by a steep ascent to get to the island. The mist kept coming and going which made our visit quite atmospheric (as well as damp!).  We listened to a very interesting talk about the archaeology of the castle site and about the difficulties of finding archaeological remains.  We could have explored for even longer than we did, but hunger and the rain drove us back to the car for a late pasty lunch.

We headed off in the direction of Boscastle, remembering how fifteen years ago, we had walked along the coast between Tintagel and Boscastle.  After a reviving hot chocolate for BB we wandered through the village down to the harbour. The rain had stopped and it was almost threatening to brighten up.  It is amazing to think that this village was devastated by a flood in 2004.

Our drive home was quite different to the drive down, as the mist had lifted.

We got home to tidy up, pack up and use up the remains in the fridge for tea.
