Queer Goings On
Worked on trying to decipher those names on that 18th century map last night - combination of low res image on net and archaic handwriting made one of them particularly difficult.
Contacted little brother - he's good at this kinda stuff. He had a copy of the map too. It's part of a fine collection of maps of Old Seaham put togther by a resident - www.east-durham.co.uk.... great maps section.
Long story short, brother tried until the early hours and we were no further forward.
This morning I tried emailing the site manager owner designer type person explaining my dilemma.
Bounced back - undeliverable mail.
Sigh.
Lovely day, went for a walk on the beach instead to cheer myself up. Remembered that today was the last day the church (St. Mary's - the one we're doing the project about... are you still awake at the back???? ) was open to visitors. So - went along with my sketchbook... did this drawing of one of the anglo saxon windows.
And you know when you have a feeling someone is watching you????
Turned out to be a casual aquaintance from flickr.
We did the hello what are you doing here thing... and I noticed on the wall behind him... a copy of the map - yes THE map that's been giving me the headache!
Not only that but it was a beautifully clear copy!
And the name was easy to read.
The friend had his very spiffing camera with him and he kindly took a pic of the map for me... which he will send on.
Hurrah!
Ahhhh.
I like happy endings.
