Kingia autralis - bullanock
I thought this was a member of the grasstree family Xanthorrea but it is not. It's a single species member of the Dasypogonaceae family and pretty unique.
With this curious collection of bobbly flower clusters , this one and a number of others live in some bush at a local golf club. They look very alien to me with their crown of 'antenna' and being VERY slow growing at 1.5 cm a year these guys must be quite old standing at at three metres plus though mere midgets compared to some real oldies at eight metres and 400 years old.
When I asked at the club if A and I could wander through the bush and take photos was advised to wear a hard hat! Judging by the number of wayward balls we found, it was good advice!
