All Aboard Audrey

Saying good bye to the Fringe. Unlike Mel, my breaking point with the Fringe and the Festival lies much later, and not working in the centre of town now it hasn't been reached this year really. But it's still nice when the last show is over, and the city reverts to quiet (a bit, at least, given this is now a year-round tourist spot).

Anyway, last show for this year was Korean magic show 'Snap!', which was a really charming thing to finish up with. Not necessarily Vegas slick, but all the better for it, and a few of the performers were genuinely superb. Boxsmall Market provided a quick lunch, and some new tweed trainers/loafers, a drink on George Street, before George and I took to Audrey here for a free 15 minute film about the Edinburgh Festival, using Pathé footage from 1947, 1952 and 1967.

There was a presentation about her restoration beforehand, which was incredibly interesting. She was one of 7 movie trucks built for the government to tour around the country teaching companies and industries how to work better. The other 6 are no more, but Audrey has been beautifully restored, seats about 30 in superb comfort, and has been doing evening shows with a different comedian each night introducing their favourite movie.

It's just such a fantastic story, especially as they have not only found one of the original 7 trailers (in which there were samples of what the industry was being shown the film for), but Audrey's actual trailer, in a farmer's field, being used as a workshop. That's now being restored as a cocktail bar. And all while the owner, who gave the presentation, holds down a regular job.

I really hope they're back next year and I'll be going along to one of the evening screenings.
