Turnstones at the Peedie Sea
The small waders are starting to return to Orkney for the winter from their breeding rounds in places like Iceland. I saw about eight turnstones in Deerness on Tuesday and three today at the Peedie Sea in Kirkwall. The front bird is in summer plumage. The rear bird is a juvenile. There were a couple of sanderling and dunlin in Deerness too and lots of ringed plover, though they breed here.
