Archerfield House

After late lunch at Gosford Bothy we noticed signs for Archerfield Walled Garden so went in for a nosey round. On leaving,  passing within sight of the main house, we drove right through the extensive estate and golf courses, noting the millionaire's row of houses under construction. Too remote for us, we won't bother purchasing.

Grade I listed Archerfield House and the main beech avenue were designed in c.1730 for the Nisbet family, named after the archers of King Edward 1st who pitched their tents here during the English invasion of 1298. The present landscape was designed c.1780. Such names as the Earl of Ruthven, Mary, Queen Of Scots and Winston Churchill appear in its history.  It was sold 1963 to the Duke of Hamilton, who now lives in the Home Farm, in 2001 the house and half the estate were sold for residential use and the development of the golf.

There is significant historical interest in the Archerfield Estate, the earliest being a Bronze Age (3,500 years-old) burial cairn which is preserved in the Fidra golf course. More artefacts mentioned here (scroll down to History).
