Surveyor who ?

I found this old tree with a blaze cut into it on the Mt Hay road.  Initials XK and the year numbers  xx79.  You cant read the first two numbers.  I don't think it 1979,  the tree and the blaze would be older than that.  So I reckon 1879.  Now I wonder if anyone knows any surveyors or explorer types from 1879?  There was a coal mine around Katoomba at that time.
