Robin Hood's Bay....

Still in North Yorkshire we were in the pretty, seaside village of Robin Hood's Bay. Why it's named so isn't clear. Robin Hood is a fictional, possibly legendary, character who, if he actually existed, operated in the English Midlands around Sherwood Forest near Nottingham, 140 miles south of here.

There are no facts backing up that he visited here or even had a summer place in the village. The closest I've found is that the village had been attacked by French pirates. Robin Hood attacked them, drove them off and then returned the valuables to the village.

In spite of the slim evidenc of contact with a fictional character, it has not stopped people marking the connection. We found Little John's cottage and Merryman Cottage as well.
