Goodbye Old Friend
Today we said farewell to a member of the family, our old frig. After Mr Flum and I were married the first frig we bought (at auction) didn't work so we bought this one new, which has served us well over some 38 years.
It has not balked at its door being plastered with stickers as the children acquired them - initially Plaque Attackers from the dentist, later Ghostbusters, Dukes of Hazzard and football stickers among others.
Even when, as the family grew, we invested in a larger model, this stayed with us as, though offered to several people newly setting up home, none needed it so it remained with us, moving house twice and living in the garage. It performed sterling work as overspill storage, especially at Christmastime when the necessity for more cold storage was required. And, unlike modern models, it tolerated external temperatures as low as minus ten, which, on some occasions, has been the case.
Now rusting, with seals too tired to prevent self-defrosting, resulting in embarrassing pools on the floor, it has been discharged to the retirement home for aged electricals, the recycling centre.
RIP, old friend.
