Breithorn from Hubel
WHR Day 11.
*Day 10 (yesterday) seemed to get lost in the world of Blip, take a look if you like big views...
With the demise of the Europaweg we now take the train into Zermatt and go to see possibly the most iconic mountain in the world.
I'd hoped I'd put together a walk that would see all 10 clients taking part - so at least we'd have started and finished together, but it wasn't to be, and one of the American chaps went straight to the hotel.
So 10 of us set off to view the North Face of the Matterhorn from the foot of the Zmutt Glacier. Lunch in Zmutt provided much hilarity (for some) as one client, despite being told, went back for seconds at the buffet - and promptly got charged twice....
With distant thunder heads rising behind the Dufourspitze and the wind building we took the high traverse back to Zermatt via the historic stone houses at Hubel. It's hard not to blip the Matterhorn when in Zermatt (indeed -see extras) but there are so so many 4000m+ peaks here that I've decided to go with the Breithorn which actually dominates most of the views. Five years ago this summer whilst a ferocious storm raged I spent a very very long 40hours in the bivouac Rossi e Volante at 3787m -a fantastic little sanctuary bolted onto the cliffs on the back of the Breithorn - we broke for cover at first light when it had passed - I can still remember the looks on the faces of the first tourists off the first lift of the day as we sat and drank coffee and laughed aloud at the simple joy of being.
