Keep singing
The crop of buffalo berries in some of the parks around Canmore, is so abundant this year that there are a lot of bears around. We abandoned a walk round the woods of our holiday cottage today when we were told that a mother brown bear with cubs had been sighted just 30m west and the park rangers had warned of a grizzly in the woods behind us.
More importantly for us is that 2 of the orienteering events this weekend , planned for Canmore Nordic Centre have had to be relocated because of the high number of bears in the park. This will be loads of extra hassle for the clubs organising these Canadian Orienteering Championships which are world ranking events for those competitive orienteers who worry about this sort of this ( son M). To move an event at 2 days notice is a big head ache for the organisers.
It is compulsory for us to carry bear spray when orienteering. We have had lots of lessons on being bear aware and what to do if approached by a bear. Singing is recommended to warn bears of your presence .
