Sherkin adventure
Today's adventures took us to Sherkin Island. We caught the ferry, 10 minutes crossing from Baltimore, and you are instantly in another world. First we did a pub crawl (2 pubs on the island, only one serving food) and sat and had lunch with the most spectacular views across the bay. Yes, super healthy lunch - B had lasagne which came with a monster serving of chips. And, yes, that other large helping of chips was mine! Suitably fuelled I got him walking - first down to the Horsehoe Bay - look at the all that greenery and montbretia and sheer beauty. Then we walked off towards Silver Strand, admitedly quite a hike. We stopped at the community centre where a very good photographic exhibition was just opening, and visited an artist's studio in a garden. The walk to the strand was quite long but we were rewarded by the sight of a little van selling crepes. We ate these on the beach watching a brave little boy and his dog paddle - the water was seriously cold. The island taxi happened to be rattling past and we stuck out our thumbs and leapt in - quite a hair raising journey back to the quay as he was taking no prisoners and the roads were tiny and full of pedestrians, bikers and horses. We came back on a tiny car ferry - fortunately no cars were travelling. Wrecked and weather beaten now - frittata and a scary movie ahead.
And it's son#1's birthday today - he's shooting a wedding somewhere in darkest Basingstoke. Happy birthday Will.
