Stroud Country Show
We went to the annual Country Show this morning although we could only stay for a short time, as Helena had a work appointment in the afternoon. We both love going to the show as it is a remnant of the old and more traditional community meeting places from the time when Stroud had a much stronger agricultural base. The valleys and the plains at the top of the hills were important farming areas where sheep had formed the base of the local wool processing industry for hundreds of years. Dairy cattle are also important in the nearby Severn Vale where Double Gloucester is still renowned.
There is now a more modern side to the show with a funfair aspect to attract children and their parents as well as local charity groups presenting their work. But for me the main event is still the farm animal trying to win the various competitions for 'Best in Show' in their class. Cows, calves, bulls, sheep, chickens and pigs are presented. There is even a sheep shearing demonstration every hour.
As we arrived we saw the judging of a sheep competition but I prefer the cows which seemed to have more character. I strolled to a different ring and watched the rather stern judge as she inspected and eyed up the cows. I have added two pictures to my 'Extra photos' of a wide view of the judging ring showing the location in Stratford Park, as well as a somewhat close-up moment for the judge. All in a day's work.
