One of the Many
Whilst working in the local archives I came across details of a book of remembrance put together in 1920 by Eastwood Chapel. Eastwood is a small hamlet between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge and it was where I was born.
The album was made by the ‘School and Young Person's Society of Eastwood Congregational Chapel’. It contains a short biography of everyone who left their homes because of the First World War. Most biographies are accompanied by a photograph.
Imagine my interest when I came across this entry and discovered he was my uncle. Further research revealed he was born in Gomersal in July 1898 and had 16 brothers and two sisters. He enlisted in 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers at Rochdale on Sept 10 1915 No. 241762.
He was in Egypt about ten months and then sent to France. After being there three weeks he was officially reported as Killed in Action on May 4th 1917 and was buried in Thiepval, Picardie, France.
What a waste.
