Chumming

Nothing's new, it seems.

I discovered today that in Newhaven there was , and perhaps still is, a system of 'chumming'. The fishwives as young women were given a 'chum' who would work with them, be their bridesmaid, help them when things were hard.

Carrying a hundredweight of fish up the hill into Edinburgh made them tough but they still needed their friends.
