Catharus guttatus

Just a few days ago 2 or 3 fledgling Hermit Thrushes started showing up around camp on the ends of the day. Looks like it's time for them to grow up and be adults. This one is now a fixture, hopping about in the duff all day and giving a rudimentary version of the Hermit's hauntingly beautiful tinkling glass call. I don't know if it's because it's young, but it sure doesn't mind being approached (and adored).

The genus Catharus hosts a number of New World thrush species, including the Nightingale Thrushes of Central and South America. All members of this genus possess an ethereal fluting quality in their song. To hear it takes you beyond reality, to something made of magic.
