Baladi Bread

After an adminy start to the day, the first of Ramadan, we called our regular driver, Ayman, to take us out for a spin. He brought his two sons with him, aged 12 and 7, to distract them for a few hours from the challenges of thirty looming days of fasting which they are both undertaking (no water either!). Dd soon had them singing 'Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' and at one point all five occupants of the car were in full voice! Ayman invited us to join him and his family for Iftar - the breaking of the fast which is a very special family affair on this first day of Ramadan. A prior engagement meant we couldn't accept but he did take us to a famous backstreet bakery which makes the best baladi/everyday bread in Cairo. We had to pass a security cordon to enter the area but it was well worth it. Here you see a grandson learning the trade. The smell of the hot fresh roundels was almost too much for the boys in the back seat when they were thrown the bag to hold. They had not eaten since 3 am but only had one hour more to endure before the break fast at 6.55 pm precisely!

Here's a link to Dd's companion shot . . .
